Fall Family Photo Style Guide

So you just booked your fall family photo session? But what should you wear? We’ve got some tips on how you can look your best and get amazing photos.

General Rules

Muted, Fall Colors and Neutrals, But Don’t match

Wear rich, autumn colors like creams, maroons, mustards, army greens, burnt oranges, grays, and deep blues. When planning your color scheme, keep in mind what colors look good on your family and will look good as a portrait hanging in your home. Choose 2 or 3 colors, and spread it out across the whole family.

Classic vs. Trendy

Classic is always in fashion. In wearing classic styles, you’ll make sure your family photos look good today, as well as 15 years from now. Those tiger-striped leggings definitely won’t.

Layer Up, But Not Too Much

You want these photos to feel like fall—cardigans, sweaters, scarves, knitted hats—but realize you will be moving around and potentially walking throughout the session. A sweater with a jacket and your favorite scarf might get real warm, real quick.

Stick to One Pattern

Florals, plaid, and stripes all mixed together—it can be overwhelming and distracting. If you decide to go for a pattern, start with that outfit, and then pull from the colors in the pattern to dress the rest of the family.

Balance

Make sure you have balance across the colors your family is wearing. If mom is wearing a maroon shirt, then maybe someone else has maroon pants. Or someone is wearing a navy blue shirt, and someone else has a navy blue scarf. Spread that color scheme throughout the whole family.

Consider Your Shoes

Shoes can make or break an outfit. Dad may be looking fine, but those grass-stained new balances will ruin the photo. Also, rethink wearing heels. You may have to do a little bit of walking, and you want to be comfortable.

What to Avoid

  • Sweats or athletic clothing

  • Branding on clothing

  • Sneakers (unless they are very subtle)

  • Neon and wild colors (say no to pink pants or shirts)

  • Pinstripes (they create banding in your photos)

  • Too tight clothing

  • Excessive jewelry (keep it simple and classy)

Now you’re set to look amazing for your fall family photo session. All that’s left is to show up and have fun!
